Botox
The American Society of Plastic Surgery has released statistics that state Botox® was ranked the most often requested non-surgical cosmetic procedure in 2001, with over 1.5 million Americans treated, and the numbers have steadily grown since that time, by 2003 it’s use increased over 3000%. It has been
used for cosmetic procedures since the late 80’s with no significant side effects and very short, if any, recovery or down time. The effects of Botox® last, on average, 4 months, and some clients that have been treated for several years report it lasting longer, often up to twice as long. Some myths associated with Botox® are:
- Botulinum Toxin A/ Botox® is a poison: False, it is not a live bacteria, but a purified protein.
- Botulinum Toxin A/ Botox® will cause me to loose sensation or feel numbness where injected: Botox® does not affect the sensory nerves. The proteins saturate the receptors on the muscle that it is injected into and prevents the chemical message from the brain to the muscle from occurring, thereby preventing the muscle contraction. When the muscle does not contract, the skin does not wrinkle, and the lines smooth out over time.

Dermal Fillers
The aging process reduces approximately 1% of our dermal (under the skin) collagen per year and with it hyaluronans, or Hyaluronic acid (HA), this phenomenon increases after the age of 50. Hyaluronic acid exists naturally in all living organisms and its primary function is to provide volume and pliability to skin and is crucial for new cell growth. As we age, the skin cells ability to produce HA is lost and the size of the molecules also decreases so it does not hold water as well, hence the sagging or drooping of the skin, namely around the nose and mouth (also known as nasolabial folds) and jowls. A primary characteristic of HA is its ability to hold up to a thousand times its weight in water. This characteristic makes it an ideal filler because as the body breaks down the HA over time, the remaining product continues to attract water from the body, which in turn allows the shape and volume to be maintained until it is completely gone.
Restylane®, Perlane®, Juvaderm Ultra® and Juvaderm Ultra Plus® are clear, injectable gel based HAs that are fully biodegradable, natural and safe with no skin testing required. Down time is minimal, with 2-4 days of swelling, possible bruising and slight tenderness to the injected sites being the most common side effects reported. In addition to reducing lines around the nasolabial folds and jowls, these products are excellent for lip enhancement, with the recovery time being a bit longer than in other areas. These products last, on average, 5-8 months.
Evolence® is a relatively new product on the market in the US, but has been used in Canada and Europe for over 6 years with excellent results for the treatment of nasolabial folds and jowl lines. This product is a non-synthetic collagen that, when injected, replaces collagen that has been lost over time. Results are immediate, there is little to no down time, no reported swelling, as it does not attract water like HA, and minimal bruising, if any.
In addition to Botox® and fillers for wrinkle reduction, excellent skin care maintenance at home and monthly visits to your chosen provider for medical dermatologic skin evaluation, micro-dermabrasion treatments, chemical peels, and other tightening procedures are imperative for keeping wrinkles to a minimum, preventing new wrinkles from forming and maintaining overall skin health.
